CGG Begins Multi-Client OBN Survey in Gulf of Mexico

May. 16, 2019

French integrated geoscience company CGG has commenced its first multi-client ocean bottom node (OBN) survey in the US Gulf of Mexico.

The OBN survey will be carried out in the Mississippi Canyon area, located in the north-central region of the Gulf of Mexico. It aims to provide well-sampled, full azimuthal coverage with long offsets to enable precise imaging of the geologically complex structures in the Mississippi Canyon.

Seabed Geosolutions is providing the acquisition services, following which the data will be processed by CGG Geoscience’s Subsurface Imaging in Houston. CGG noted that the OBN processing techniques will help in developing a fine-tuned velocity model, further delineating drilling targets in the region.

In a separate statement, Seabed Geosolutions said that the project will leverage its advanced 4C technology CASE Abyss ocean bottom nodes for imaging the subsurface. This node system will be deployed by remotely operated vehicles to 2,100m water depths.

Preliminary products are expected to be available in the third quarter of 2019, with final products slated to be delivered in the first quarter of 2020.

CGG CEO Sophie Zurquiyah said: “We are pleased to initiate our first multi-client OBN survey, in this strongly growing market, as clients take advantage of the enhanced geologic understandings that OBN data and advanced imaging can deliver.”

The Mississippi Canyon survey is supported by industry prefunding and is expected to support CGG to initiate further multi-client OBN surveys in future.
