More than 1,200 exhibitors from all over the world, including some 60 from the Chinese mainland, began on Monday to showcase their innovative practices which are expected to help shift and drive the world's energy mix, according to the organizers of the Offshore Technology Conference.

HOUSTON, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Tens of thousands of offshore energy professionals, experts and companies from all over the world flocked to Houston to explore and exhibit cutting-edge technologies and practices that may reshape the global offshore industry at a forum that kicked off on Monday.

Topics ranging from arctic oil and gas opportunities, and deep-sea mining, to reservoir engineering, carbon capture and storage, as well as various marine resources, are discussed during packed panels at this year's Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), one of the largest offshore industry shows in the world.

"Bringing these experts together and hearing their opinions lets you know what the current state of that particular topic is. And from that, it's possible to look ahead a little bit and understand the direction that the topic is taking within the industry," Victor Schmidt, a Houston-based upstream energy specialist, told Xinhua at the OTC.

On the opening day, OTC also awarded the winners of this year's Spotlight on New Technology Award at a ceremony. Up to 15 technologies, seven of them from small businesses, were selected as their innovations and technologies are helping reshape the offshore energy sector.

"At OTC we take pride in recognizing the companies transforming the future of the offshore energy sector," said Paul Jones, chairperson of the OTC Board of Directors, in a statement, adding: "Revolutionizing the field is no easy task."

Parallel to technical and panel sessions, more than 1,200 exhibitors from all over the world, including some 60 from the Chinese mainland, began on Monday to showcase their innovative practices which are expected to help shift and drive the world's energy mix, according to the organizers.

"This is a great way to meet new clients, new suppliers. This is probably the best show as it relates to oil and gas," Chawki Benteftifa, president of New Jersey-based Helidex Offshore and a regular OTC visitor for years, told Xinhua in an interview.

Luis Lai, America region general manager with the Chinese Sany Petroleum Intelligent Equipment Company, said the scale of this year's OTC show is "significantly smaller" compared to what it was before the COVID-19 pandemic, but he still holds high expectations.

"This is still a very good platform for us to show our new technology and equipment overseas, and then to communicate with partners and look for cooperation in many ways," Lai told Xinhua, noting that Sany is one of the world's leading engineering equipment producers.

"In fact, the United States can be said to be our largest potential market for us, and we are still looking for some opportunities for cooperation" despite disturbances facing the two countries' relationship, Lai said.

Baoshun Yang, general manager of Qingyun Star Fittings Company based in Shandong, east China, told Xinhua that it was the first time for him and his company to join the OTC and he was glad that during the first morning at the show, they were already approached by four overseas buyers.

"We want to find more American clients. Now all of our products are exported to Europe," said Yang, adding that the company has been doing well in Europe with advantages in product quality and pricing.
